OS Upgrade

Project Background & Scope

A major European bank sought to upgrade and consolidate its extensive server platform, which included over 1,000 Windows servers supporting hundreds of individual systems.

Project Outcome

The project was divided into two phases:

  • Phase 1: Establishment of a baseline and strategic recommendations, managed by external contractors.

  • Phase 2: Execution of the upgrade and implementation, carried out by the bank’s internal IT support team.

A standardized questionnaire was developed to collect system-specific information, and a comprehensive inventory of systems and system owners was created. Systems were prioritized and assigned to multiple project teams, each consisting of a project manager and IT professionals. These teams engaged directly with system owners to complete the questionnaires and, for more complex systems, facilitated coordination to ensure accurate data collection.

Client Benefits
  • A complete and categorized inventory of all systems:

    • Category 1: Systems ready for immediate upgrade

    • Category 2: Systems with dependencies requiring special handling

    • Category 3: Systems incompatible with the target Windows version

This structured approach enabled the client to plan and execute the server consolidation efficiently and with minimal disruption.
